1. Introduction

Newports Institute of Communications & Economics is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students, staff, faculty, and visitors. As part of this commitment, Newports Institute has implemented policies regarding drug abuse and smoking on its premises to ensure the well-being and welfare of its community members.

2. Drug Abuse Policy

a. First Time Offenders:

i. In case of minor infractions related to drug abuse, the Anti-Drug Taskforce Committee (ADTC) shall refer the offender to the in-house counselor/psychologist/psychiatrist for medical and mental health treatment.

ii. The referral must be in writing and necessitate the completion of the counseling or rehabilitative program within a specified period.

b. Subsequent Offenses:

i. For significant or repeated violations of the drug abuse policy, the ADTC shall issue a warning and potentially suspend or expel the offender, with parental notification for students.

ii. The NEWPORTS INSTITUTE will comply with any reporting requirements under applicable law.

iii. In cases involving distribution or sale of illicit drugs, the NEWPORTS INSTITUTE shall report the violation to law enforcement agencies.

3. Smoking Policy

a. First Time Violations:

i. Upon recommendation by the ADTC, the NEWPORTS INSTITUTE shall issue a warning letter and notice of displeasure for a first violation related to smoking.

b. Subsequent Violations:

i. For a second violation, the ADTC shall issue suspension of the student for one week or more, with parental notification for students and appropriate disciplinary action for faculty and staff.

ii. For third violations or more, the ADTC shall issue a longer suspension and further disciplinary action based on the severity of the violation.

c. Visitor Violations:

i. Visitors found smoking on NEWPORTS INSTITUTE premises shall be fined Rs. 1,000 by the NEWPORTS INSTITUTE.

ii. Any unlawful sale or distribution of tobacco on NEWPORTS INSTITUTE premises shall result in a Rs. 5,000 fine and reporting to law enforcement agencies.

4. Implementation and Enforcement

a. The Anti-Drug Taskforce Committee (ADTC) shall be responsible for monitoring, implementing, and enforcing the drug abuse and smoking policies at Newports Institute.

b. Violations of these policies shall be dealt with promptly and in accordance with the specified penalties.

c. Any disputes or appeals regarding disciplinary actions shall be addressed through the established grievance procedures at Newports Institute.
